Unlike your “strictly-no-white-foods-diet” resolution from last year and your “work-out-five-days-a-week” resolution from the year before, we’ve got a resolution that you’ll actually get excited about in 2015:
That’s right. A new year is the perfect opportunity to dive into one of the most historical, gorgeous, exciting places you might never want to leave: The Colonel Apartments in DC’s historic Shaw neighborhood, named after an American Civil War Colonel who was truly revolutionary.
We’ve discussed the historical merits of the ‘hood before, but here are a couple extra things worth noting:
We’ve got the legendary Howard Theater at the north end of the neighborhood – a spot where presidents hung out with citizens since 1910. It was a hot entertainment spot where both white and black audiences intermingled – no mean feat in those days. Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald… the star studded list of performers goes on.
Are you a sports fan? The Verizon Center lies just past the south border of Shaw, just about 10 minutes from The Colonel. Catch a Wizards, Capitals, Mystics, or Hoyas game – then pat yourself on the back as everyone else races out to their cars at the end, and you just hop on the Metro.
Culture junkie? Head a little further south, and wander around some incredible Smithsonian Museums: The National Museum of American History, the National Air and Space Museum (nerd stuff), The Freer Gallery of Art (astounding Asian artwork), the Hirshhorn Museum (the coolest contemporary art), or the National Museum of Natural History (dinosaurs!).
Take a break from all of those museums when it’s nice out, enjoy the flowers and greenery at the United States Botanic Garden. And when you’re bone-tired, you’ll be so happy you moved into The Colonel’s comfortable penthouse. Or 1-bedroom. (Either way.)
We’ve talked about some pretty compelling reasons to move to the Shaw neighborhood. Now, let’s get to the logistics, shall we?
If the word “moving” sends shudders down your spine, Just read this guide, follow everything it says, and moving will be a breeze. Worried about moving without a car? Here’s why The Colonel is perfect for you. Hint: walkability and Metro access. At this point, you’ve got to be out of excuses, right?
It’s New Year’s Eve and if you still need a resolution, we think this one is pretty solid. So… when can we expect you?
